Illustrate it pretty cool as well! To use mental ray in max (versio 6, though this should be the same for version 7), get your view ready and open the render options window. In the 'common' tab, go down to 'Assign Renderer.' Next to 'production' you will see the Default Scaline Renderer. Click on the Illustrate! Menu item then on the Authorize button. Send the Illustrate! 4.1 Application ID to Digimation. If you have registered your existing copy of Illustrate! 4.0 they will send you an authorization code. In this video we cover how to use the illustrate plugin in 3ds Max Addeddate 2013-11-16 09:01:04 Identifier bliptv-20144-Caseinc-3dsMaxIllustratePlugin642. Is a non-photorealistic renderer (NPR) for 3ds Max that allows you to render 3D scenes in a variety of artistic styles. The most common is the cel or toon style where the objects are rendered with a single or limited number of colors and the edges are drawn with a line.
So I've been a little behind on actually writing articles as I've been focused more on learning and troubleshooting issues with software. In that vein I wanted to share a solution that I recently found regarding a 3ds Max 2017 plugin called Illustrate! that has been used in projects ranging from feature film to technical product design. As many users may have found, this program is quite buggy and the most recent version for 3ds Max 2017 is no exception. As my day job requires we utilize this software for the creation of assembly instructions, I have had to find an efficient workaround to have the plugin operate consistently. After hours of testing, (on my personal time I might add), I have found a solution that doesn't crash the 3ds Max program when utilizing this software, especially if you need a vector line drawing of a product for any reason. Please note that this solution has yet to be tested with .dwg and .dxf files as I haven't saved out versions of my test file in those versions currently....I will revisit this issue in a later article. With all that being said, please find below the steps that I have found will generate vector line drawings that can be used in Adobe Illustrator and converted to other program specific files once in Adobe Illustrator below:
Open file in 3ds Max 2017 and open the render setting tab.
At the top of the Render Settings window, set the Renderer to Illustrate! 6.0 Renderer and at the bottom of the same window under the 'Assign Renderer' section set both the Production and Material Editor fields to 'Illustrate! 6.0 Renderer.
Next under the Renderer tab, Select 'Vector' as the applicable Renderer. Once this is done scroll down in this window and under the Vector Format section specify what file format you would like the render saved in. For this example I've used Adobe Illustrator AI, however, you have the option here of saving the image as an Autocad (dxf) or Shockwave Flash (SWF) file as well.
Once you have selected your file format, hit the Render button in the Render Setup Window and your file will be saved to the applicable location.
Please feel free to test this method and let me know whether or not it has solved your issues with the program.
(Note) - In order for this process to work, a user will need to setup the desired format using the Illustrate Render Wizard. For a reference on how to do this please refer to
